The Importance of Owning Your Own Platform

First off, let me start by saying that this is not about my fiction. So for my readers, please hang in there. :)

This is about my author platform. Actually, this is about my platform as a creative artist / entertainer.

I feel that I have become way too reliant on social media and such. I have accounts with Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, Linkedin, and a few others actually.

That made me very overwhelmed typing all those out. That’s a lot of time being spent elsewhere than creating.

I have most of those sites connected so when I post to one, it will go to many networks at once so I don’t have to go do it myself.

In fact, this blog will post to at least four or five sites once I hit publish. That’s not bad at all.

Here’s the thing though, I have built up my tribe on all of those sites, thinking that nothing could ever go wrong. But today, it did…

This morning, I woke up to Facebook telling me that they didn’t believe that my name was really Creep Creepersin, and that they needed to see some sort of documentation that that was my name.

Then they threatened me into telling them by saying that they would delete my account if I didn’t use my name. They told me the reason why it was so important, was because if I didn’t use my real name, my friends wouldn’t be able to find me.

That’s crap. Everyone I need to know, knows me by what I want them to know me as.

The reason why they care, is because they sell your information to companies that will then sell to you. Those companies want to know the real you. So that they can make sure Facebook isn’t making up profiles and charging them for fake accounts.

I understand that Facebook is a business and they have every right to run their company anyway that they would like. I get it.

What I don’t get, is how Nazi they are about getting their way. They could see that I am a real person, I post, I communicate with people, I have even paid for their shitty ads that don’t really work.

In the long run they can do whatever they like and drive away as many products (people with profiles) as they want as long as their customers (the people who put those ads on the right sidebar and every other damn post) are happy.

Then to top things off, I had a trailer for one of my films, blocked on youtube, because youtube wasn’t sure if I had the rights for MY FILM.

Again, someone else site, with my content, punishing me because they can.

I am really fed up. I really need to start focusing on my fans, on my site.

That Facebook page, I have had for a couple years and had built up a very strong presence with friends, followers, like pages, groups and events.

Now, it’s all gone.

If I didn’t have my mailing list, The Creeper Crew, I would have been pissed off today like nobodies business, but knowing that I have the core of those people from Facebook, that makes me feel a lot better, and a lot stupider, that I wasn’t putting more of a focus on building that list up over the years.

So, I am going to be a lot more active here and on my other sites that I OWN. So, please, feel free to message me by email or in the comments.

If you haven’t already done so, please sign up for my mailing list so that I don’t lose touch with you if any other of the social networking sites decides to  give me the stiff middle finger. :)

Keep it creepy!
